    A total of 237 boxers from 42 countries will take part in the 5th AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships Ningbo 2008. All five continents are represented. Russia and Ukraine are the teams with the higher number of boxers (13) in the competition that will take place in the Chinese Ningbo City from November 22-29. Kazakhstan has the second largest squad with 12 athletes, then Turkey with 11, and Canada and DPR of Korea with 10 apiece. Within the 13 weight categories on stage, 54kg is the most crowded with 27 boxers, followed by the 54kg weight class with 26.

    Age Category:

    Athletes aged between 17 to 34 are eligible to compete. Age is determined using the year of birth of the boxer: (i.e.) boxers born between 1974 till 1991 are eligible to compete.

    After five outstanding World Championships, AIBA prepares to hold its sixth edition of the Women World Boxing Championships. Boxers between the ages of 19 and 34 will compete in this year’s edition of the AIBA Women World Championships in Bridgetown, Barbados. Preliminary registration is now open until June 30th.

    This year’s event will take place from September 6th to the 19th and is the first time the competition is being held since the IOC’s decision to include women’s boxing in the Olympic Games. The bouts will begin on September 9th and the finals will be on September 18th.

    The Championships will be staged in 10 Weight Categories: 45-48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg, +81kg. The bouts will consist of four rounds of two minutes each with one minute to rest between rounds.

    Among the anticipated boxers to attend the AIBA Women World Championships Barbados 2010 are two-time world champion and 2008AIBA Women’s Boxer of the Year Katie Taylor (IRL) along with four-time 46kg world champion Mary Kom (IND) and Canada’s Mary Spencer and Arianne Fortin, both two-time world champions.

    AIBA Women’s Boxing Ambassador, two-time world champion and runner-up in 2008, Anna Laurell (SWE), is also predicted to take part in the 2010 edition.

    The AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships is one of the fastest growing competitions in international boxing. Women’s boxing has taken the World by storm ever since the first AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2001 in Scranton, United States of America.

    Women Boxers aged 17 to 34 compete in 10 weight categories: 45-48 kg, 51 kg, 54 kg, 57 kg, 60 kg, 64 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg, 81 kg and 81+ kg.

    The seventh AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships will take place from 9 to 20 May 2012 in Qinhuangdao, China and will serve as the only qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympic Games. For the very first time in history, women boxers will be competing at the Olympic Games, in three weight categories: 48-51 kg, 57-60 kg and 69-75 kg. With 24 quotas places (eight in each weight categories) up for grabs, this 2012 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships is sure to be fiercely competitive.
