Dian Gomes Appointed Member of ASBC Athletes and Youth Commission, Herbert Embuldeniya Awarded AIBA Order of Merit
Dian Gomes, Former President of the Sri Lanka Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) was honoured with Membership of the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Athletes and Youth Commission on the 6th of September 2011 by Gofur Rakhimov, President of the ASBC.
Mr. Gomes, who at present sits in the Finance Commission of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) has been lauded for the boxing revolution in Sri Lanka during his tenure as the President of the ABA, when Sri Lankan boxers propelled to internationally acclaimed standards by qualifying for the Commonwealth Games as well as the Olympics.
The AIBA has also awarded Herbert Embuldeniya with the AIBA Order of Merit for the year 2011. Ching-Kuo Wu, President of the AIBA has recognized Mr. Embuldeniya’s dedication to the development of boxing throughout the years, and will be handing over the award at the 2011 AIBA Extraordinary Congress on the 24th of September in Baku, Azerbaijan as a token of appreciation of his contribution to the sport.

2011 Dates, Venue and Time On 22nd ,23rd ,24th and 25th August 2011 at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo 13, commencing at 4.30 pm on each day.
The Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) of Sri Lanka has reportedly received the go-ahead from the Ministry of Sports to proceed with the Association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the year 2011, informs Sri Lanka’s boxing administrative body.
As per this positive sign, the ABA would now be able to continue with their planned calendar, for the latter half of 2011.
Following are the newly appointed officials of the ABA, at its recently concluded AGM, held at the Auditorium of the Sports Development Department on July 4:
Aubrey Peiris: Nominated as President
A former Royalist who boxed for the school winning the Stubbs Shield in 1984/1985. He was also the captain of the Royal College Boxing Team in 1985. A School Coloursman from 1983 to 1985 he continued to win in boxing throughout including the LV Jayaweera Boxing Meet, TB Jayah Boxing Meet, Central YMCA Boxing Championship etc. He also won school Colours in 1984 for Soccer. He was an outstanding sportsman playing Rugby Football for Peterson’s Sports Club in the position of Flanker in 1991/92. Aubrey has been an International Referee and Judge since 2006 and had the privilege of Officiating at the SAF Games 2010 in Bangladesh as R/J. Aubrey is the Manager – Operations of Commercial Bank and acted as the Secretary of the Commercial Bank Sports Club during the past.

Manju Wanniarachchi, Sri Lanka’s best hope for an Olympic Gold in 2012, in a rush of unfolding events has decided to retire from boxing.
Manju’s talent was spotted while he was a 19 year old schoolboy from Vidyartha College, Kandy during the 1999 SAF Games in Kathmandu. Manju became a protégé under the wings of Dian Gomes, who was working towards a boxing resurgence in Sri Lanka. And within a career span of 11 years, Manju brought in the most number international medals in boxing for Sri Lanka, including the Silver Medal at the 2007 Kings Cup in Thailand, the Bronze Medal at the 2008 Kazakhstan Olympic Trials, where he narrowly missed the qualifying for the Olympics, and the Silver Medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Championships, bringing glory and honour to a nation thirsting for international sporting recognition. He was also the unbeaten Sri Lankan Bantam Weight Champion for over 10 years.

The first Sri Lankan boxer to compete at the Olympic Games since 1968, Anurudha Rathnayake also made his way through to the quarterfinals of the AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007.
Here's a story of an athlete who is helping boxing give cricket a run for its money as the most popular sport in Sri Lanka.
Rathnayake will take up a new role in developing the next generation of Olympic boxers later this year.
